Job Description

Job Summary:
An Ultrasound Technician, also known as a Sonographer, is responsible for performing diagnostic imaging using ultrasound equipment to capture high-quality images of a patient's internal organs, tissues, and blood vessels. These images help physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. The Ultrasound Technician will ensure patient safety, comfort, and quality imaging while following proper protocols and procedures.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Preparation and Care:
  • Greet patients and explain ultrasound procedures in a clear, comforting manner.
  • Prepare patients for ultrasound exams, ensuring proper positioning and application of gel.
  • Monitor patient comfort and address any concerns during the procedure.
  • Review patients' medical history and prior imaging studies to assist in interpreting results.
  • Perform Ultrasound Imaging:
  • Use ultrasound equipment to capture diagnostic images of the patient’s internal structures, including the abdomen, pelvis, heart (echocardiogram), and blood vessels.
  • Operate ultrasound machines to perform various types of scans (e.g., abdominal, obstetric, gynecological, vascular).
  • Adjust equipment settings to ensure optimal image quality for accurate diagnosis.
  • Ensure that all necessary images are captured according to the physician's orders and clinical protocols.
  • Image Review and Documentation:
  • Review captured ultrasound images to ensure they meet diagnostic quality standards.
  • Maintain and store ultrasound images and reports in the facility’s electronic medical record (EMR) system.
  • Document relevant information about each procedure, including patient data and any observations during the exam.
  • Collaboration with Medical Team:
  • Work closely with physicians and other healthcare professionals to discuss findings and provide clinical support.
  • Provide preliminary findings to the supervising physician, but not interpret diagnostic results.
  • Assist physicians in performing specific diagnostic procedures, such as guided biopsies or injections, if required.
  • Equipment Maintenance and Safety:
  • Ensure ultrasound equipment is properly maintained and functioning.
  • Perform regular equipment checks and report any technical issues or malfunctions.
  • Follow infection control protocols and ensure a safe, clean, and sterile environment.
  • Patient Education and Support:
  • Provide information to patients regarding what to expect during the ultrasound examination.
  • Answer patient questions and address any concerns regarding the procedure.
  • Administrative Tasks:
  • Schedule appointments for ultrasound procedures and maintain accurate patient records.
  • Ensure proper coding and billing for ultrasound procedures.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Education:
  • Associate’s degree or higher in Diagnostic Medical Sonography from an accredited program.
  • Licensure/Certification:
  • Certification from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or equivalent certification.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification may be required.
  • Experience:
  • Previous experience as an Ultrasound Technician/Sonographer preferred but not required.
  • Experience with a range of ultrasound techniques (e.g., abdominal, obstetric, vascular) is a plus.
  • Skills:
  • Strong technical skills to operate ultrasound equipment and capture high-quality images.
  • Ability to position patients effectively and maintain patient comfort during procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail for accurately documenting patient information and imaging results.
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with patients, physicians, and medical staff.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy relevant to ultrasound imaging.
