Job Summary

The Physician Assistant (PA) works under the supervision of a licensed physician to provide patient care, diagnose and treat illnesses, prescribe medications, and assist in surgeries. The PA conducts physical exams, orders and interprets tests, and educates patients on managing their health. They are a vital member of the healthcare team and work closely with physicians, nurses, and other medical staff to provide high-quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care and Diagnosis:
  • Take comprehensive medical histories and perform physical examinations.
  • Diagnose and treat common illnesses, injuries, and medical conditions.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests (e.g., blood work, imaging).
  • Develop and implement treatment plans, including prescribing medications and recommending lifestyle changes.
  • Patient Education and Counseling:
  • Educate patients on their health conditions, treatment options, and preventive care.
  • Provide counseling and guidance on diet, exercise, and mental health.
  • Discuss potential side effects, risks, and benefits of treatments and medications.
  • Clinical Procedures:
  • Perform medical procedures within the scope of practice, such as suturing, wound care, joint injections, and minor surgical procedures.
  • Assist in surgeries and other complex medical procedures under the supervision of the attending physician.
  • Administer vaccines and other injections as required.
  • Collaborative Care:
  • Work closely with physicians, specialists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care.
  • Participate in case discussions, patient rounds, and care planning with the healthcare team.
  • Provide on-call support as required, depending on facility needs.
  • Documentation and Record Keeping:
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient medical records, including assessments, treatment plans, and follow-up care.
  • Ensure documentation complies with healthcare regulations, including HIPAA standards.
  • Review patient progress, adjusting treatment plans as necessary and documenting any changes.
  • Administrative and Miscellaneous Duties:
  • Review and manage patient referrals to specialists or for additional testing.
  • Assist in administrative tasks, including ordering medical supplies and managing patient flow.
  • Participate in continuing education to maintain certification and stay current with medical advancements.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Education:
  • Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Licensure and Certification:
  • Active state licensure as a Physician Assistant.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications may be required, depending on the practice setting.
  • Experience:
  • Previous experience as a Physician Assistant, particularly in [specialty/setting, e.g., family medicine, surgery, emergency care] is preferred.
  • Experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems is beneficial.
  • Skills:
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with patients, families, and medical staff.
  • Detail-oriented and capable of managing multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Knowledge of medical procedures, medications, and equipment used in patient care.
