Job Description

Job Summary:
A Medical Assistant (MA) is responsible for providing both clinical and administrative support to healthcare providers in a medical office or clinic setting. The MA assists with patient care, preparing patients for examinations, assisting with minor procedures, managing medical records, and performing routine office tasks. The role requires a combination of strong clinical knowledge, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care and Assistance:
  • Greet and check in patients, ensuring their comfort and addressing any immediate concerns.
  • Take and record patient vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rate.
  • Prepare patients for examinations by assisting with undressing, positioning, and draping.
  • Assist physicians during examinations, minor procedures, and diagnostic tests.
  • Administer medications and vaccines as directed by a physician, including injections, oral medications, or topical treatments.
  • Perform basic laboratory tests (e.g., urinalysis, blood glucose testing) and prepare specimens for lab analysis.
  • Sterilize and maintain medical instruments and equipment.
  • Clinical Support:
  • Prepare and maintain patient charts, ensuring that medical histories, examination results, and lab reports are up to date.
  • Assist with minor medical procedures, such as wound care, bandaging, or splinting.
  • Educate patients on procedures, medications, and self-care instructions as directed by the healthcare provider.
  • Manage patient follow-up appointments and provide patients with necessary instructions.
  • Administrative Duties:
  • Answer phones, schedule patient appointments, and manage appointment calendars.
  • Process patient billing and insurance information, including verification of coverage and obtaining prior authorizations.
  • Maintain and organize patient medical records, ensuring accuracy and compliance with HIPAA and other regulatory standards.
  • Handle medical office correspondence, including faxes, emails, and mail.
  • Process patient insurance claims and assist with coding procedures for billing.
  • Update and maintain inventory of medical supplies and equipment, ordering when necessary.
  • Patient Education and Communication:
  • Provide patients with pre- and post-procedure instructions, as well as educational materials on health and wellness.
  • Answer patient questions, provide explanations, and relay concerns to the physician.
  • Assist in preparing patients for procedures, explaining steps involved, and ensuring that they understand any follow-up care needed.
  • Other Duties as Assigned:
  • Support office operations during peak periods or as needed.
  • Participate in team meetings and trainings to stay up to date with healthcare practices and regulations.
  • Ensure cleanliness and safety of the medical office, including patient areas, exam rooms, and equipment.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant program from an accredited institution is preferred.
  • Certification:
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA) through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or equivalent certification is preferred, but not required.
  • CPR certification (BLS) may be required depending on the healthcare setting.
  • Experience:
  • Previous experience as a Medical Assistant is preferred but not required.
  • Experience in a clinical or healthcare office setting is a plus.
  • Skills:
  • Strong clinical and administrative skills, including knowledge of medical terminology and office procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills for interacting with patients, physicians, and other medical staff.
  • Ability to multitask and remain organized in a busy environment.
  • Proficiency with office equipment and healthcare management software (EHR/EMR systems).
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and follow HIPAA guidelines.
