Director of Nursing (DON)
Position Type: Full-Time
Reports To: Administrator / Executive Director
Position Summary
The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for overseeing and directing all nursing services within the facility. The DON ensures the delivery of high-quality patient care while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This role provides leadership, supervision, and support to nursing staff to promote clinical excellence and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Clinical Leadership
- Direct and supervise all nursing operations
- Ensure quality patient care and positive patient outcomes
- Develop and implement nursing policies and procedures
- Monitor clinical documentation for accuracy and compliance
- Staff Management
- Hire, train, and evaluate nursing staff
- Develop staff schedules and manage staffing levels
- Provide mentorship and performance coaching
- Address employee relations and disciplinary matters as needed
- Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with state, federal, and accrediting body standards
- Maintain readiness for inspections and surveys
- Implement infection control and safety protocols
- Quality & Performance Improvement
- Monitor quality indicators and implement improvement plans
- Lead risk management and patient safety initiatives
- Oversee incident reporting and follow-up
- Budget & Operations
- Assist with departmental budgeting
- Manage supply inventory and equipment needs
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and administration
Job Requirements
Qualifications
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license (required)
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; MSN preferred
- 3–5+ years of nursing leadership experience
- Previous supervisory or management experience
- Strong knowledge of healthcare regulations
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills
